Although it is commonly accepted that upgrading an old, inefficient boiler to a new model is likely to result in substantial savings in terms of energy bills and carbon emissions, installing a new boiler is only a small step towards achieving a more energy efficient home. Mr Judd explained that, in order to extract the full benefits from a new boiler installation, it is necessary to ensure that the plumbing is well maintained.

Mr Judd said: “If somebody puts a new boiler on to an existing system and they don’t flush the system through properly and they don’t add the additive, then an A-rated condensing boiler very quickly becomes a B-rated boiler”. Mr Judd’s comments are unlikely to surprise the many experienced and well-trained gas engineers in the UK; however, they should prompt customers to interact more with engineers whenever an installation is carried out. The gas engineer who fails to address the plumbing when installing a new boiler will ultimately cost the homeowner money, as the new boiler would not run as efficiently as it ought to and would, therefore, consume more energy.

Homeowners who are unsure of the benefits that can be derived from installing a new A-rated boiler only need to look to official documentation on the subject, as the UK Government estimates that over £200 on average can be shaved off energy bills each year by upgrading from an E-rated boiler to an A-rated central heating system. Consumers, however, fear that it would take too many years before a return on investment could be noticed – an argument that is not shared by Mr Judd and many others in the business. Improving the energy efficiency of a home is not a one stage process. Various tasks can be undertaken to improve the overall efficiency of a home, including the installation of solar water heating, double glazing (or even triple glazing), loft insulation and cavity wall insulation.

Historically the subsidies provided by the US and EU to farmers has allowed their farmers to be the only ones competitive. However with the demands of wheat for bio-fuels, cost of food has risen at least until 2010. I wonder if it was easier for farmers in developing nations to sustain crop growth for food would this make a difference in the global market?

Actually, the cost to grow crops and harvest them are pretty much equal across all nations. In fact, the United States is likely the most efficient and thus the lowest cost producer of food in the world. A US Farmer planting and Harvesting Wheat can do more work per acre using John Deere equipment than a farmer in Zimbabwe using animal and human labor.

So I would say that your question is moot. Anybody producing crops in other countries will most likely have a higher cost of production, making their food sale into the global market likely to keep prices at or higher than they already are…

What you might see are higher prices for seeds and farming equipment as global demand drives up prices.

npower hometeam’s nationwide search for Britain’s oldest boiler has come to an end with Colin Sadler from Billericay being revealed as the owner of the oldest boiler in the country.

While the floppy disk, the video cassette and Bananarama have all been and gone, Colin Sadler’s boiler has been quietly ticking along at his home in Essex since 1968 and is still going strong.

Colin had never given his boiler a second thought, until his wife Sue read in his local paper that npower hometeam (http://www.npower.com/hometeam ) was on the search for Britain’s oldest system. It was then that he thought his old Crane Caviller boiler, that has been in his home since him and his wife moved in 28 years ago, may stand a chance.

Since the Government’s boiler scrappage scheme launched in January, npower hometeam, which installs, services and repairs boilers, has overseen the replacement of hundreds of old, inefficient boilers across the country. Inspired by these discoveries, the company launched a nationwide hunt to find the oldest boiler and, out of over 100 entries, Colin’s system was confirmed as the oldest.

He will now receive £3,000 towards a new A-rated energy efficient boiler and installation.

Colin commented: “When my wife and I moved into our home in 1982, the seller warned us the boiler was quite old, but we decided to keep it as it was in good working order. It wasn’t until an engineer recently told us he was reticent to service it because it was so old that we thought it might be about time to have a new one.

“That said, when I entered it into the competition I certainly didn’t think it would be the oldest one they’d find. It’s done us proud for many years, but we’re looking forward to get a new energy efficient boiler, as I think this one has earned its retirement.”

The UK Government’s Boiler Scrappage Scheme is largely considered to be a success in terms of encouraging households to become more energy efficient. Under the scheme, eligible households can receive a voucher of £400 if they replace their old G-rated boilers with new A-rated models, which are more environmentally friendly and can result in domestic energy savings of more than £200 per annum per household. Upgrading an old boiler in this way, however, may not be quite so cost-effective as it might first seem; indeed, after a leading plumber – Charlie Mullins of Pimlico Plumbers – derided the scheme by claiming it to be “financial madness”, more attention has been paid to how affordable it is for customers. Despite concern that a quote of £3,000 or more for a boiler replacement under the scheme was simply not economically viable, many of the leading energy providers have matched the Government’s £400 voucher offer. Therefore, savings of up to £800 are possible under the Boiler Scrappage Scheme – but do the figures actually add up?

E.ON, Scottish and Southern, British Gas and nPower have all matched the Government scheme by offering the additional £400 discount to customers who buy the replacement boiler from them. However, some householders have claimed that some of these energy giants charge inflated prices for installing the new boilers, which negate any savings generated under the scheme. Independent engineers have also moved to heap criticism on the domestic energy giants for inflating the prices.
